Bing Surfboards

Bing Copeland played a major role in helping surfing and the surfboard industry to become what they are today. At 13, he became fascinated while helping out at pioneer surfboard maker Dale Velzy's workshop in Manhattan Beach. He spent the mid-'50s in the Coast Guard stationed in Hawaii and surfed the big waves of Oahu's North Shore and Makaha. In 1958 he sailed across the Pacific and introduced modern surfboards to New Zealand. By 1960, back in Southern California, he was making surfboards commercially and his company became one of the longest-running and most progressive in the surfing world.

Nose: 18 1⁄2“
Middle: 22 3⁄4” – 24”
Tail: 16 1⁄4”
Thickness: 3” and up

The original Bing Noserider was first designed in 1965 by Bing Copeland and Donald Takayama. This classic traditional surfboard was built for one sole purpose: noseriding. The Noserider today is still made according to the 60s design and consists of a deep tear-drop concave for lift, 5-stringer t-band (1/8” cedar, 3/8” balsa, 1⁄4 “ black foam, 3/8” balsa, 1/8” cedar), a red and black high-density foam tail block, 10 oz. volan fiberglass and or competition band upon request. A board that works in small to mid-size waves in clean conditions. This is the original noserider that all noseriders have been modeled after.

Nose: 18 1/2”
Middle: 22 3/4” – 24”
Tail: 16 1⁄4”
Thickness: 3” and up

A very close sibling to the Original Bing Noserider, the NR-2 incorporates the same design and noserider fundamentals with a simpler stringer configuration, lighter glassing and fin box, giving you an overall lighter, more versatile traditional log with all the noseriding functionality of the Original Noserider minus the weight and trouble of a glass-on fin. Ideal for small to head high waves in any type of wave and great for the traveler who wants to bring the Original Noserider but doesn’t want the hassle.

Nose: 19“
Middle: 22 5/8” – 23 5/8”
Tail: 16 1⁄4”
Thickness: 3” – 3 1⁄4”

Applying all of the nuances of original Bing surfboards, Matt Calvani designed this surfboard to be the next generation of the noserider. A surfboard inspired by the Bing Noserider that combines the template of the Bing Lightweight with a deep blended concave, giving you lift for noseriding while maintaining speed and glide down-the-line. A popular 3-stringer square tail board for small to medium surf for any type of wave, the step in the tail gives lift for noseriding and thins out the tail for more maneuverability. This versatile noserider features a pivot fin much like the noserider fin but narrower and more functional for turning.

Bing Gold Standard
Standard Sizes: 9’0” to 10’0”
Nose: 18 1⁄2”
Middle: 22 1⁄2” – 23 1⁄2”
Tail: 15 1⁄2”
Thickness: 3” – 3 1⁄4”

The newest addition to the Bing line of surfboards, this board has the nose of the traditional Bing Noserider with a modified Silver Spoon tail, allowing lift for tip riding and maneuverability in turning. An essential addition to your quiver, this board will provide drive off of the tail and stability on the nose. This board features the step of the Silver Spoon tail with a more pulled-in diamond-shaped outline that allows for smoother arching turns. The combination of the two board designs gives the board the ability to turn and noseride as well as the classic noserider, the perfect evolution of the noserider.

Bing Trimulux
Standard Sizes: 9’0” to 10’0” +
Nose: 18 1⁄4”
Middle: 22 1⁄4” – 23 1⁄2”
Tail: 15 1⁄4”
Thickness: 2 15/16” – 3 1⁄4”

Available as a square tail or a pintail, this model’s name says it all. This board can be ridden 2” smaller in length then most traditional single fins because of it’s relatively little rocker. Flat on the deck and the bottom with a slight blended concave, Matt keeps this model an 1/8” thinner than most of the Bing models while maintaining the board’s thickness to an eggy 50/50 rail. This gives the board extra glide and turning sensitivity as well as ample noseriding ability for it’s size. The surfer who chooses this model will get a whole lot of performance without a whole lot of board!

Bing Lightweight Step Deck
Standard Sizes: 9’0” to 10’0” +
Nose: 17 3/4“
Middle: 22 1⁄2” – 23 3⁄4”
Tail: 15 1⁄2“
Thickness: 3” – 3 1⁄4” +

The Bing Lightweight was built in the later 1960s when the emphasis changed from noseriding to turning. Gliding and noseriding became less important, though still a factor, and drive and turning became the main focus, Bing designed this single fin surfboard which then evolved into the modern longboard. This board is glassed lighter (6+6oz deck, 6oz bottom) for increased maneuverability, hence the name “Lightweight” and was designed with little concave and a step deck to lessen swing weight in turning. Ideal for medium to large surf and strong offshore conditions.

Nose: 18 1⁄4“
Middle: 22 1⁄4” – 22 3/4”
Tail: 14 3/4“

Each board is a functional piece of art, with a unique fabric inlay deck patch, pigmented bottom wrap and custom fin. The nose is pulled in for a tighter fit in the lip line, giving stability for noserides. For further lift while perched on the tip, there is a modest tail rocker and wide based 9”-10” single fin. Matt created a diamond tail with a scooped out deck that’s pure eye candy. It also has a slight V-bottom through the tail, which allows for unmatched maneuverability off the back foot and through full rail power turns.

Bing Bonzer
Standard Sizes: 5’4” to 8’0”
Nose: 14” – 15”
Middle: 19” – 22”
Tail: 13" – 15”

This board is characterized by its double concave bottom, two long low-profile side fins, and single center box setup. A board built for speed and drive off of the turns similar to riding the edge of a ski/snowboard, the Bing Bonzer is a retro glimpse into today’s surfing and maintains its functionality in medium to large hollow and powerful surf.

Nose: 14 3/4”
Middle: 19” – 23”
Tail: 15 1/4”
Thickness: 2 1⁄2” – 3 1⁄4“ +

It has every advantage of a fish’s glide and speed, while giving you the maneuverability, control, and responsiveness of a shortboard. The peak created by the double concaves acts as a stable center fin. Ideal for a variety of wave conditions, sizes, and surfing tight in the pocket. Bing Single-wing Quad (Q2)
Standard Sizes: 5’10” to 7’6”
Nose: 18”
Middle: 19” – 23”
Tail: 16“
Thickness: 2 1⁄2“ – 2 7/8”

The Bing Single-wing Quad is a modified version of the MR twin-fin of the late 1970s with a slightly flatter rocker and fuller outline. Progressing from the original twin-fin setup, Matt Calvani has added two smaller back fins to give the board more control and responsiveness. Working well in every day conditions from knee-high to double overhead waves, this board is ideal for longboarders looking to ride a smaller mid-length boards with plenty of glide. Bing Double-wing Quad (Q4)
Standard Sizes: 5’2” to 6’6”
Nose: 16”
Middle: 20 1⁄4" – 22”
Tail: 16 1/2“
Thickness: 2 3/8“ – 2 3/4”

The Bing Quad is the natural progression from the twin-fin fish. Drawing on 15 years of shortboard shaping experience, Matt Calvani has developed a quad-fin fish that is fast like a twin-fin but maintains control like a modern thruster, while giving you almost as much looseness and maneuverability as a modern-day shortboard. Where the twin-fin may not handle wave size and power as well, the Bing Quad excels in these conditions. This board is built with a double-wing swallow tail with a shorter board and wider outline and should be ridden 2” longer than the twin-fin fish.  Currently, Bing offers this model with Future fins, Canard fins, or ProBox fiberglass quad fins.
